For the second time, Enderun Colleges held a Battle of the Bands competition, last October 5, 2012. Organized by Banquets class students under Mrs. Ruth von Siebenthal-Hung, the event was a required activity of the course.

What seemed like a well thought out project, the event in actuality almost did not meet its undertaking. The student organizers attested that within exactly one month, they had to come up with all the prerequisites, in order to make the event happen.

In spite of the wide selection of opportunities to coordinate with different suppliers and sponsors, the time constraint allowed execution to be difficult. Fortunately, with perseverance, the students determinedly scoured the internet looking for suppliers, and exhausted their contact list to look for sponsors. Mrs. Hung also supported the students by referring to them a number of her contacts from different corporations to sponsor raffle prizes.

The day before the occasion, the group was called in by the Student Life Office to fill out alcohol policy requirements, and finalize security concerns with the Security Department. With everything confirmed, the students were ready to hold the event.

The competition was composed of four bands. Initially there were eight participants but four backed out last minute. Fortunately, the group was able to adjust the schedule, hours before the event started.

Another impending concern for the event was the weather. During such time, rainfall occasionally dampened the Taguig area. Because the event was held in the sports court, heavy rain could have posed challenges, especially with regards to the electrical connections, a significant component of the event. Miraculously, although the clouds heavily blanketed the sky, the most that the event encountered was a quick drizzle.

The group was able to contact San Miguel Brewery, Inc. as one of their sponsors. The company offered to sell beer during the event at the standard retail price, and provided a giant San Miguel Beer bottle balloon, which caught the eye of some spectators.

Other sponsors included Boracay Paradise Hotel, Club Punta Fuego, Inc., Anjali Impex, New World Hotel, Werdenberg International Corporation, Crowne Plaza Galleria, Holiday Inn, Dr. Francis Sta. Maria, Anjoy’s Cakes ‘n’ Cookies, Chef Tony’s Gourmet Popcorn, and Bon Appetea.

With the help of one of Enderun’s instructors, Dr. Francis Sta. Maria, a professional music producer, the event was able to have guest performances by singers Stella Ignacio and Gio Comia.

The bands who competed were The Cray, Harlequin Carnivale, Proclamation 22 and The Next Episode. Proclamation 22 bagged the first prize, retaining their title from the competition last year. Harlequin Carnivale came in second, and The Next Episode won the third prize.

The event ended with a satisfied audience, and band members pleased to show off their talents and took home their prizes. The organizers stayed in longer to clean up, exhausted, yet happy that they were able to hold such an event in short notice.
