Music as A Coping Mechanism

Music. When we hear of the word music, we immediately think of different songs, our favorite artists and even our favorite genres of music. People have been listening to music for centuries and centuries. It has also been slowly evolving just like us humans.

Listening to music relieves stress while still providing some level of assurance. The lyrics can help with our mental health when some of us are going through personal problems. One example of this would be when I was at my lowest. I went on Spotify and listened to Hillsong Worship, a Christian band that is committed to equipping believers around the world through God-centered songs. One song that I will always love listening to would be Oceans because of its message. It made me feel better, and at the same time, strengthened my relationship with God.

Although some appreciate listening to Jazz and Soul music, there are some people who appreciate listening to Electronic Dance Music (EDM), R&B, Rap and Pop music. Pop music is common nowadays due to the young listeners that love listening to artists such as Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers and more. Some concrete examples of how music is used as a coping mechanism would be:

  1. Music makes us feel confident about ourselves whenever we feel sad
  2. Listening to music relieves our stress that we have from school or work while still providing us with some assurance
  3. It brings listeners closer with the artists because of the relatable lyrics
  4. It may calm us down whenever we have anxiety attacks that are caused by stress or personal problems
  5. It also makes us feel some sort of relief since through music we know that we aren’t alone in this world

Some songs that I highly recommend would be We Can’t Stop by Miley Cyrus because this song empowers young women like me to be comfortable in enjoying life whilst not thinking too much about other people judging us since only God can judge us. This song makes a person happy because of its uplifting beat.

Another song that spreads positivity would be Change Your Life by Little Mix because the lyrics send an uplifting message about making changes in our lives or that changing our life is a good thing especially for our mental health. It also makes us happy because of the message that it portrays to people that love music.

Lastly is Pretty Girl Rock by Keri Hilson. I recommend this song because it makes young women like me feel beautiful and confident.

These songs have really been in my Spotify playlists for years. Music can spread positivity because of the message that the listeners receive whenever they listen to songs. Although there are so many ways for us to find hope, music will always be here for us especially since we can always relate to the lyrics no matter the time of the day
