Titans Ladies Basketball Varsity win against St. Benilde

The Titan lady basketballers were noticeably taller and more muscled than the slightly smaller St Benilde players, but it was not clear at the start who would win the game.

St Benilde kept a full court press from the beginning in an attempt to hold possession of the ball more frequently and cut down our shooting opportunities. Conscious of Enderun’s superior shooting record,  they also tended to commit more minor fouls, allowing a single point in order to regain possession of the ball.   But while this tactic kept the Enderun lead controllable, it  tired out St Benilde by the half, with Enderun ahead 18 -16. The first half had been a point by point contest, neither Enderun nor St Benilde holding the lead for long.

Then in the second half, the Titans struck with obvious aggression, leading by 10 points in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Team Captain Shen Callangan (6) led a series of drives with, Kate Marcos, Francine Geli, Roxy Liao, Abi Manzanares

But St Benilde caught on and pressed full court again, often stealing the ball on bad passes, they also won several foul shots. And their guards began scoring 2 and 3 pointers!  But the more tightly they guarded the Titans, the deeper the Titans drove in to score, especially Fayth Pumaren and Francine Gell.

In the rest of the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th, St Benilde whittled down our lead to just 2 points, the Titans still leading  46-44 in the last 2.41 minutes. Then St Benilde’s Gula (8) scored one of her wild outside shots, tying the game at 46 all,  but with a foul! She also won the foul shot, St Benilde taking the lead  48-46.

Taking possession of the ball, the Titans had only 1.11  very nervous minutes. All of a sudden as Marcos and Shen Callangan were driving in on the right side drawing the St Benilde to them, Joylyn Pangilinan was all alone in the outer left court, she caught a swift pass, took a deep breath and tossed the leather through the air for a three pointer. Enderun won 49-48!
