In the global pandemic and lockdown, music played a big role in giving us something positive to look forward to. Albums were dropping everywhere starting from ‘Chromatica’ by Lady Gaga, ‘Folklore’ by Taylor Swift, ‘Future Nostalgia’ by Dua Lipa, and ‘After Hours’ by The Weeknd to name a few. Not to mention how trends arised from Tiktok that involves captivating music and sure LSS like “Did the full 180” to “but now, there’s nowhere to hide” to “pamparampampam…” and many more phrases that certainly trigger our brain to sing and groove. Looking at it, have you ever wondered if one of your classmates can sing or perhaps, produce music? Let’s explore the creative side of Titans resonating first with sound waves, the art of singing. We’ll be featuring Enderun students who passionately involve themselves in the world of music.

Starting from our home court, we have GELM or known by the Enderun Community as Angeli Sato, the Enderun INK Editor-in-Chief. Yes, you’re not hallucinating, our very own EIC is a start-up artist. Angeli is a freshman taking Operations Management. She began making music in the form of writing stories and poems when she was younger, and she grew up in a family that valued music, particularly her father. Then she realized, why not combine both? Afterwards, she started to give melody to her stories and poems. Planting the buds of her music career, what kept her going was the idea of making an impact on the people who were listening to her craft. Connecting with people, sharing stories, unlocking feelings and experiences are her main goals whenever she creates music. This drive establishes an invisible string to her listeners and supporters. For her, what is important is that she is doing something that she loves. Moving on with what she loves, here’s her EP, “Gemini” that’s been her dream since she was 15. “It’s a dream come true”, Gelm mentioned in our interview. At the end of the day, her goal in the music industry is making sure she owns a spot. This does not necessarily mean that she should be well-known or recording studios are running after her; rather she wants that even at least one person knows her and her music. The spot she’s pertaining to is the life she will live through others in the music industry.

Next up is Enderun Ambassador, Mikhail Nierras. He is a sophomore taking International Hospitality Management with specialization in Hotel Administration. Mikhail, known as Hail, kick-started his music career through his brother’s influence: from jamming with his brother then taking it to the next level as the drummer of the DLSU squad in highschool. Chronically, he first tried to learn the trumpet but lost the drive for it then he met the guitar. Learning guitar was life-changing for him as he can now play various types of it from acoustic, electric, and bass to name some. As Hail’s love for music slowly unveils, he keeps hitting the notes because of the desire of making his own music. His first heartbreak gave birth to his first written song, “Leave a Memo” because he got tired of telling people the story behind their break-up so he made a song about it. Recently, he polished this song and released it again but now for himself. Another reason that kept him going is that he treated music as a positive outlet. Hail feels music is a good vent for his emotions and feelings and would rather play music all night than do vices like smoking and drinking. In the near future, his goal in the music industry is to be noticed and if fortunate enough, at least in his locality. Also, he would like to try other genres and collaborate with other artists and musicians. Hail shared that he also deals with creative blocks. At times, he stops and takes a break because this leads to his answer when he feels he’s not giving justice to his craft.

Lastly, our aspiring artist, Alyssa Diaz is a 12th grader under the HUMSS SHS Academic track. I think we can now all agree that family and environment plays a role in our development because just like our previous featured artists, Alyssa also fell in love with music through her family especially her mother’s side who are mostly musically inclined. She first learned to play the violin then the guitar and ukulele which were self-taught. Since she was young, it was not a secret that she loves to sing. What motivates her to keep going is the desire she’s feeling within. She sees herself as one who continues to progress.. Alyssa seeks to nurture her skills and talents more than what it is in the present. She continues to seek growth. When I asked her about her best work so far, she was taken aback because she hasn’t publicly released her music because according to her, it’s still not the right time. Alyssa then mentioned about the adrenaline she feels whenever she’s creating or performing. For instance, she once was part of a choir who competed abroad and won first place.. As a starter, her goals in the music industry is to create music that makes people happy. Through her expressions, she envisions sharing her talents to other people. Alyssa shares her conviction to music. “I don’t think I’ll be stopping anytime soon because I just started.” We’re excited about what’s in store for this talented young girl.

Overall, these are some of our talented Titans who are passionate about the art of music. The Philippines’ music industry has a lot to improve on but recently started to become more inclusive, and progressive. Opportunities in this industry are like a shooting star: it barely passes by and for some people equipped with telescopes, they can even choose their stars. More so, this is a great start to appreciating the creative side of our Enderun Students. Let’s continue to support Gelm, Hail Nierras, and Alyssa Diaz alongside other artists! Support them through these links: Angeli’s Gemini & GELM and Hails’ Leave a Memo. Please continue creating music. Mabuhay kayo!
