Opportunities for Exposure
Being a student of Enderun definitely has its perks, and one of them is being offered a basketful of opportunities at such a young age. The Office of Student and Career Services has again come up with two interesting seminars that encourages us to explore the world that lies beyond our classroom.
An Internship Overview Seminar intended for the November intake will be held this Wednesday and Thursday (August 3 & 4, 2011). For Hotel Administration students, the time slots are as follows: 10:00-11:30AM, & 2:30-4:00PM at BA 103. The thursday schedule will be held from 2:30-4:00PM at the same venue.
Some tips for a first-timer:
It is advisable to bring a pen and paper during the Overview. You’ll never know if any of the speakers say something important that isn’t found on the powerpoint presentation. These pieces of information are very helpful, especially if it concerns your VISA application and processing for international internships.
Inquire about the required pre-requisites that you need to take before you actually venture out on your internship. This will surely help you with your career pathing.
Do away with shyness! Ask questions if you aren’t clear with any of the points discussed. The topics covered may typically include accomodation, expenses, etc.
Listen, and be aware of the reputation of hotel properties. Do some research –not only through the internet, but from word-of-mouth as well. Take time to talk to the upperclassmen about their experiences and what to expect.
Keep an open mind. You may have initially planned to have your first internship at a big and fancy hotel abroad, but do keep your options open for local properties that could probably offer more practical (budget wise), and worthwhile experiences too.
The second Seminar is known as the “Hotel Series Talk” to be held on Friday, August 5, at HA 201 from 11:30-1:00 PM. The school has invited world-renowned fashion designer turned hotelier, Helena Carratala Mander. She is the owner and General Manager of the Mangenguey Resort located in Palawan. From the looks of the website: www.mangenguey.com, it certainly seems that Ms. Mander definitely has something interesting to convey to all of us about life, being resilient and persistent towards going after what you love, and lastly, the inevitability of change.
