Enderun bags another top award at the 3rd Philippine Sommelier Competition
On May 20, 2019, Enderun Colleges student Jiyoung Park won the top award for the Junior category of the 3rd Philippine Sommelier Competition. Asked about her win, Jiyoung shared that, “I felt happy when they announced my name. Winning this also motivates me now even more to further improve and help more people discover the wonderful world of wine. Many think it’s all about knowledge, but I think a great sommelier stands out because of a friendly, approachable attitude. We are here to help our guests enjoy wine to the fullest—and to achieve that, people skills are vital. The job of a sommelier is very customer-centric. Although we get these kinds of recognitions, our guests’ enjoyment is what we are all about.”
The growing Philippine Sommelier Competition consists of some of the country’s finest sommeliers who go head-to-head in a test of knowledge and experience. Held annually, the sommeliers exhibit a showcase of skill and grace under pressure as each one competes in an international-format competition consisting of a written and a practical examination. Serving as judges include local and respected names in the Philippine food and wine scene, as well as known sommelier experts regionally.
According to Enderun Colleges Associate Dean for International Hospitality Management Bel Castro, “Enderun Colleges is at the forefront of wine education. We have partnered with many of the most recognizable names in the country’s wine industry. The program itself is in-depth. It’s not just about the wine but it also touches on the best practices in serving and other important aspects of being a sommelier. To-date, Enderun has produced many aspiring sommeliers who have joined and won various competitions.
