Sincerity to Succeed
There wasn’t one single moment during our conversation that I saw her frown. She made me feel so at home. It was just like talking to someone I already knew from the past. I was greeted with her warm smile as I entered her office on a rainy Wednesday morning.
With that very secretive sense of humor, she never fails to bring that halogen smile to the faces of her students. Nanette Señeres is all about smiles. Despite the bubbly character of this woman, her manner, demeanor and voice all suggest a fitting sketch as the new head of the college. She may be reserved, but she absolutely beams.
A very sweet and caring professor, she isabsolutely someone to look up to. Nanette is a petite lady, but she projects the presence of a much larger woman. As a result of her love of travel, she found herself graduating with a bachelor’s degree in tourism from the University of Santo Tomas. She then took up a
Master’s degree in Business Administration in the same institution where she graduated magna cum laude. Yet having already accomplished quite a feat in academics, she is now taking a doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Management in St. Paul Manila University.
While achieving these academic successes, her career path focused on the things that she loved: travel and hospitality. And being married to a pilot is just a windfall. She succeeded in becoming someone who she never expected herself to be when she was young. Asked on why she decided to be in the hospitality industry, she answers,“it’s all about the exciting things you see and the people you meet.” She learned that she could be someone different, someone more passionate in serving others and finding the fulfillment in making people happy.
Observing this philosophy, she finished a study about labor management and productivity of an international hotel chain in Manila. Her philosophy in the profession is “to treat people the way you want to be treated.” The value she wants to instill in her students is to do those small things that make someone happy and feel appreciated. After having a child, she learned not only to appreciate life, but also to appreciate others more. “It’s important that you want to be with people; you have to be a natural people pleaser.” She believes that you can never fake sincerity in serving others, especially if you don’t have that innate character of wanting to serve others. “It is a tough road to be in this industry and it’s going to be a steep climb. But at the end of the day, it’ll always be the people who have sincerity that will succeed.”
Believing in the value of transmitting knowledge to today’s youth, Señeres has already worked in over five universities including an institution in Malaysia. Her post focuses on teaching various subjects like principles of hospitality, travel and tour management, tourism marketing, food and beverage operations and hotel sales and marketing. For all her talents and aptitude for education, Nanette spends her free time either singing or playing tennis. She is also a dynamic member of the country’s Council of Hotel and Restaurant Educators. She intends to bring exciting developments to the college.
